Long before we had Valentine's Day, ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia every year on February 15th. A fertility ritual that honored the She-Wolf Lupercal--mother of Romulus and Remus--there was ritual sacrifice, whips and blood rituals, lots of nakedness, and "random coupling"--which often resulted in marriage by the following February. Over the next few thousand years the holiday transformed into one of romance, materialism, and a celebration of a certain kind of love.
